It’s been quite a while since I last posted an update here, but there’s a good reason for that. I’ve been writing pretty solidly for the last month or two, and in that time I have been able to bring Cain’s story almost to a close. Currently, I’m starting the last chapter, which wraps up several plot points, sets a few new ones for future stories, and provides me with another milestone I can use to chart my journey here.
Cain is an interesting character. He’s a young, Native American man from New Mexico who, like a lot of kids that grow up in the desert of the US Southwest, never really had a chance at more than a subsistence level of living. He worked in the local bar’s kitchen, made mistakes and had triumphs from time to time, and did his best to use humor to make everyone’s world a little brighter when he could. Impulsive and a little headstrong, he would find himself in trouble more often than not, often needing to rely on physical strength to get out of a jam, rather than thinking it through.
Introducing a person like that to genetic re-sequencing that introduced military ethics along with self defence training and an ingrained respect for a chain of command was a fun challenge, and allowed me to guide his growth in some challenging ways. Looking back on his journey this far, I honestly can’t wait to see what else he brings to the party.
I’m jumping into the first edit of the manuscript right after I finish this chapter, and hopefully, if everything goes well and I don’t run into any insurmountable barriers, I’ll be ready to publish by about February or March of 2024. Fingers crossed!
